So tell us — who inspires you? How are you taking the message that “it’s not about age, it’s about attitude” and applying it to your own life?

(BTW — I’m pretty inspired by Bill Booth, the man who invented the tandem parachute. He helped me overcome my fear of flying in small planes with a gorgeous ride in his flying boat!)

Extreme Producing

So, here’s my attempt at a simple explanation at what I do.

I started my career many moons ago, at the prestigious Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. When I first arrived, I thought that after four years of watching football and lacrosse, trudging through the snow and taking a few classes in how to look good at an anchor desk, I’d find a high-paying, celebrity-sighting, fast-paced job that let me wear cool clothes, meet smart people and become famous.

But by the time I graduated, I’d learned that working in journalism was about much more than headlines and stage makeup. And I’d come to terms with the idea that my real passion — my real skill — was better served by becoming a producer.

So, back to the question at hand…what is a producer? I’m the person that makes sure our television show gets done, gets done on time, gets to where it needs to be and airs when it’s supposed to. That means I write the scripts (with quite a bit of help from my colleagues), put the stories together in a way that makes for an entertaining and informative 30 minutes, make sure that we don’t put too much or too little in and oversee the production of the TV Show.

I:

• Write scripts for the show
• Try to put the stories together in a way that flows from one to the next
• Make sure that our show times out — in other words, is not too short or too long
• Oversee editing and production of the finished scripts
• Ensure that the episode is delivered on time so television stations can air it every week
• Help maintain the online archive for our episodes

Those are the basics, although being a producer is one of those many-hat jobs.

I guess in the end, while it’s not exactly the job I pictured when I was 17 years old, it’s turned out to be much bigger, and much better. I feel like the conductor of a fast-moving train, headed to an exotic and exciting destination. I’m carrying celebrities on board, and most of the time, you’ll know their names and faces before mine — that’s OK. We’ll make stops along the route, picking up new people, dropping others off and gathering stories along the way.
